Choosing your first ISO standard as a growing SME

ISO 9001 is the usual starting point — but not always the right one. A short guide to picking a first standard that pays back the effort.

For most SMEs, ISO 9001 remains the most logical entry point. It is broad enough to structure the business as a whole and specific enough to move the needle on customer satisfaction and process discipline.

When it is not the right starting point

If a specific customer contract or regulator requires ISO 27001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001, start there. Certification you actively need is always easier to justify internally than certification you might one day want.
